And for my fellow "emerging professionals, Age or lack of traditional experience doesn't hinder our ability to make a difference - so long as we care."

HWS Cleveland Award Recipient 2023.

40 YEARS of LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AT NDSU

The Dennis C. Colliton Visiting Lectureship in Landscape Architecture is being established in 2023 to honor the legacy of Professor Dennis C. Colliton, FASLA, who was the founding Program Director and co-founder of the Landscape Architecture program, now Department of Landscape Architecture at North Dakota State University. The lectureship will bring highly experienced professional practitioners to the Landscape Architecture studios within the School of Design, Architecture, and Art. With generous gifts and support, Kathy Colliton, our department giving day ambassador led our Giving Day Team to a record-setting day of over $200,000. This initiative will allow us to immediately make an impact on the student experience at NDSU. Thank You!

“Endowment income will be used for salary as well as teaching and expenses involved in attracting outstanding teachers, researchers, professionals, along with national and world leaders to NDSU.”

National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

The theme of the NCBDS38 conference is Known and Unknown Territories. The conference focuses on ways in which known territories and unknown territories are contemplated, explored, and defined in the beginning design education and spatial thinking. The question of known and unknown Territories is intended to guide beginning design students to a new place of understanding rather than to a location.

The conference was a resounding success and was made possible by professors, Jennifer Brandel, Regin Schwaen, Charlott Greub, and Architecture Chair, Dr. Susan Kliman.

ND State Board of Architecture + Landscape Architecture Changes.

HB 1465 was signed on April 25th, 2023, by Governor Doug Burgum. This bill created, for the first time, a seat for a Landscape Architect on the state board of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. We want to thank the Legislators and our fellow Landscape Architects throughout the state for your hard work and collaboration in advocating for this important piece of legislation. Many alumni from Architecture and Landscape Architecture wrote in support of HB.1465 because it makes sense to have the State Board of Architecture and Landscape Architecture include representation from each of the professions it oversees. Pictured above are landscape architects: Jake Axtman, Brett Gurholt, Bryan Leininger, Gordon Lemmel, and Craig Larson.

Faculty Updates.

Associate Professor Matthew Kirkwood has resigned his NDSU position and is pursuing other professional opportunities. We thank him for his service as program director (2013-20) department chair (2020-21), and associate professor (2013-23) of landscape architecture. Associate Professor and Chair, Dominic L. Fischer was on the design team for Broadway Square which was recently awarded an ASLA Central States Design Award.

H.W.S. Cleveland Award

This award is given annually to an individual trained in landscape architecture who is not yet licensed. Recipients have shown through their work and service to ASLA-MN that they have the potential to be a leader in the profession. The intent of the award is to help offset the cost of taking the licensing exam. Congratulations, Jordan van der Hagen. Pictured below and in his own words.

"I'm grateful for receiving the H.W.S. Cleveland Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the ASLA. I want to share a couple of relevant thoughts:
  1. Landscape architects can be influential advocates and change-makers in our communities - but we need to think beyond traditional workplace roles to do so. And for my fellow "emerging professionals",
  2. Age or lack of traditional experience doesn't hinder our ability to make a difference - so long as we care."
Dr. Anna Maria Visilia is completing a book proposal on the landscape architect James Rose. Assistant Professor of Practice, Jason Kost, received a college grant to develop online coursework for digital technologies in landscape architecture. Each of these initiatives are happening this summer and support our anticipation for an exciting academic year. But first. Summer.
